Interesting!
Wonder what this would do to human intelligence? It took millennia for us to evolve cognitive development skills and a level of maturity and intelligence. .. and just a few technologies could reverse them?

Example: I cant do the level of multiplication in my head that my dad does since I belong to the calculator generation. Wonder if the next generations would digress too?

Loved your post and the picture with the Adobe evangelists. I would like to have such an application to point out people in the crowd and their resumes (I interviewed thousands of people and very often I happen to ask myself "I know this guy - but where do I know him from???" :D

As for the GPS device that warns you about traffic jams - I have been thinking about it too for the last 2 years. They were talking about Google maps this morning on the radio - it seems that they developed such a thing.

I know what you mean, and actually I am thinking on what you lose/gain. maybe I have time this week to wrap it up in a post.

The point is, the choice may no longer be really there anymore.
I liked your essay, is beautifully constructed, however, it misses a critical perspective: you hinted at what is to be gained, but what about what is to be lost?
And what about the other side? When real life becomes a superposition on virtual worlds? (see SL). Maybe SL is Web 3.0.

Probably never. But as I said you have a choice; you can get lost if this is what you want.

Pretty scary your Magic Glasses ;)
I would definitely not call it "Augmented" reality, but "impoverished" reality since it floods you with pre-digested, more-often-than-not minor data while cutting you off from spontaneity and, yes, perhaps, a genuine exercise of imagination.
The last thing the world needs is more junk-information, interfaces and technology-intermediation :)
Doesn't anyone miss those days, without a GPS, getting lost and discovering a new and interesting place?!

@Ryan

Thanks Ryan! As a matter of fact it gave me the perfect opportunity to play with their picture :)

I have to have a look at the app you're talking about. Unfortunately I don't have an iPhone anymore (company's GSM provider doesn't offer iPhone).

I also see web 3.0 as being a deeper integration into the real world (ex: a more 3d like streetview.), but probably it will take longer to create the glasses that you wish for. Would be cool though to have access to the police database with those glasses and see all convictions the guy in front of you has. I'm sure the ride by tube would be so interesting :) .

And the picture with the evangelists is really crazy, it's a good way to remember that Miti owes you money.

Haha, good post. And I love the mocked up picture of the evangelists.

Have you played with some of the augmented reality apps on the iPhone? The Yelp one is kind of cool. It's not "detection" augmented reality, but it uses the compass and gps to overlay the location of restaurants near you so you can figure out where they are. It's pretty slick.
